The new 2.1 and 2.2 kernels do not support ipfwadm.  You must use
ipchains with these kernels.

Thus, these people are using it because they have to.  :)

By the way, unless you have a really good reason to keep using ipautofw
(and "because it works" should not be considered a "good reason" in this
case), you should try to find a way to stop using it.  The reason is
that ipautofw is considered obsolete, and is known to break network
connectivity depending on how it's used.  The newer ipportfw does not
exhibit the bad behavior of ipautofw.
