Someoone already posted the answer to the default off setting for forwarding.
Other things that caused me to tear out some of my remaining hair when we set
up masq are:
-If you don't know what gated is, get rid of it - is screws up your default
route if not set correctly
-If you're using a ppp connection you may have to set the MTU to 1500 -
otherwise some sites will be mysteriously unreachable from behind the masq box
(weather.com and dejanews, for example).
Once up it works great - ours is a 486/25 cobbled together from old parts, but:
