I would second David's sentiment.

I bought a KTI PCI ethernet card for about $25.  It's PNP and Linux picked
it right up.  I run it as a NE2000 PCI and it hasn't given me a single bit
of trouble.  In fact I run 2 of them and while I've had problems with 2
Intel PNP ethernet cards in one computer the KTI's didn't seem to have any
difficulty.
