multistory apt bld owned by boston housing authority - fire on floor 5 i think

411 am - request for 2nd alarm

'42 pipe' requests water

IC wants to know who the 2nd alarm ladders are - fire alarm gives him
the 2nd due ladder - IC asks again for the 2nd alarm ladders - fire
alarm says TL10 and L15 - IC wants both to report to the front - TL10
says they are already in the building - IC says TL10 can stay in the
building - all the while, Ladder 4 calls about 5 times and finally
gets thru to report that fire is knocked down, and the primary search
is negative

I never heard reports on searches on the upper floors - I never heard
the secondary on the fire floor announced

some units say XXX calling YYY - some say YYY from XXX or XXX to YYY -
sometimes 'Engine 42' = 'Engine 42 portable' = 'Engine 42 Officer'

on the radio it sounds like everyone is doing their own thing -
luckily, a hose line can only be pulled in 1 direction - and a ladder
can only go in 2 directions - so it is much easier to have uniformity
of the physical actions at the fire scene - but on the radio, it is a
free for all - the loud evacuation alarms that continue to sound
inside the building dont help with radio comms either - when Ladder 4
is in a mask and standing next to a blaring fire horn in a hallway, it
is almost totally impossible for anyone to understand him even if he
is getting into the repeater system 100%

Firefighters nowadays have pretty good SCBA, pretty good bunker gear,
pretty good radios, pretty good hoses and fire trucks, and thermal
imaging cameras - but if the communications has to revert to yelling
out the window from the 5th floor - then of course a lot of fireground
effectiveness is lost.

Of course I am not a firefighter - so I dont know what I am talking about.
