Why did the Pilgrims come to America? To give thanks - of course. What
were they giving thanks for? Repeaters. Yes, repeaters.

And just to refresh your memory - here is a simple explanation of repeaters.

'Repeaters' are devices that 'repeat' messages.

Cellphones use repeaters; cordless phones use repeaters; hams use
repeaters; public safety agencys use repeaters. Everybody and their
brother uses repeaters.

I find it most useful to think of repeaters this way. Lets imagine
that there is a repeater sitting on top of a mountain or tall
building. The repeater has 2 parts. Part 1 is the 'receiver'. Part 2
is the 'transmitter'. There is a wire that runs from Part 1 to Part 2.
Any message that the receiver hears is immediately sent down the wire
to the transmitter. If the receiver is listening (receiving) on
153.770 Mhz, and the transmitter is transmitting (broadcasting) on
154.430 Mhz, then any message that is transmitted on 153.770 will be
instantly retransmitted on 154.430. Another way to say this is - any
message that is transmitted 'into' the repeater on 153.770 will be
transmitted 'out of' the repeater on 154.430.

In the example above, 153.770 is called the "repeater input"
frequency. 154.430 is called the "repeater output" frequency.

How is that for a short and sweet explanation?

Note 1 - a "receiver" receives radio messages - a "transmitter" sends
out (broadcast) (transmits) (radiates) radio messages. A receiver is
analagous to the intake side of a pump - the transmitter is analagous
to the discharge side of a pump. Or maybe - you can use a hospital
analogy - the emergency room 'receives' the sick people - the front
door of the hospital 'transmits' (discharges) the healed people back
to their homes. (I am probably confusing the heck out of everyone by
being really simplistic - I will stop now).
