The Boston EMS dispatcher just tried to dispatch an ambulance to a
call in Roslindale - the ambulance replied something to the effect "we
would respond but we are on the Expressway" - that would probably be
at least a 15 minute response. Another ambulance was quickly found to
handle the call.

It is very typical to hear ambulances volunteer to take calls that
have been assigned to other ambulances. The dispatcher then will ask
each ambulance for their estimated travel time to the scene. Typically
the unit with the shorter ETA is then given the call. I would guess
that this happens on 10 to 20% of all calls.

IIRC there were advertisements in APCO magazine 15 years ago claiming
that Boston ambulances had been equipped with a satellite AVL system.
I guess that didnt work out. or the system has been broken for the
last couple of months.

Anybody have more info? Peter Sz

PS - the expression "for the tape" is frequently heard today - "our
mileage for the tape is XXX"
