just thinking out loud

Verbal IDs - I like - "Engine 1" is the officer - "Pump 1" is the
driver - other staff can be Hydrant 1, Hose 1, Nozzle 1, Engine 1
bravo, whatever

Programmed IDs - the ID that will will be transmitted by the radio -
"Engine 1 mobile" for the mobile radio - "Engine 1 portable" for the
officer's portable - "Pump 1" for the drivers portable - whatever for
the rest

As you can see - we have already run into a problem - if the driver is
using the mobile radio on Engine 1, a rookie dispatcher could get
confused since the console will show "Engine 1 mobile" - obviously
"Engine 1 mobile" is not the same words as "Pump 1" or "Engine 1"

You might think that this is all too simple to worry about. I am not
so sure. Remember - 500 people died on Tenerife when two 747s collided
due to simple stuff like this - in that case, IIRC, the phrase
"cleared for the runway" was used instead of "cleared for takeoff" -
and then 500 people died because 1 word was changed
