Rereading the West Roxbury BOI report The front windows were broken at approximately the same time that Engine 30 repositioned their line
There was a flare up (obvious in the photos) The pictures from the kitchen show that dishes were not burnt nor damaged; the wok was not tipped nor burnt Maybe this was primarily a carbon monoxide deflagration (maybe a carbon monoxide rich area ignited with a moderate overpressure event) shortly after the hose stream disturbed the ceiling tiles and the front windows were broken - I dont see any mention of debris being blown out of the restaurant - note that the front desk did not burn If there was a lot of grease in the ceiling area, I might expect more scattered scorch marks throughout the kitchen - maybe even speckles of fire throughout the kitchen and dining area. There is mention of one dime sized burnt mark on one turnout coat. One firefighter had a cut on his head, and there was blood on his helmet - this was not mentioned on the death certificate One firefighter had extreme fire damage to his mask and turnout coat and SCBA. The other firefighter had no damage to his SCBA nor turnouts. Maybe the hoselines kept the fire out of the dining room after the flame up, but were not able to penetrate into the kitchen to protect the 2 firefighters who died. On the other hand, the wok did not burn. So I guess the fire in the kitchen was not a complete burnout. It seems that a matter of inches were at play here. Maybe 1 firefighter got tangled in flaming debris - and the other took just 1 breath of fire. Maybe one of those new FIT bombs would have been useful to immediately kill the fire in the kitchen. Maybe the FIT can be connected to a detector to serve as a "instant RIT". -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "massfire" group.
