If radio repeaters go down due to power failures or ice problems, then the most basic radio comms can be accomplished by 'portable radio to portable radio' communications on direct radio channels (also known as talkaround channels, or fireground channels sometimes, or sometimes known as tactical channels). All communications will be 'line of sight' therefore it is necessary to place someone in a high spot with a radio - eiiher a portable radio or a mobile radio - but the radios have to be in direct mode
Portable radios can transmit from inside buildings - at reduced ranges - maybe up to 20 miles from a highrise - maybe only a couple of blocks from an underground bunker Mobile radios can transmit up to 20 miles from a good high spot - maybe they can transmit 1 mile from inside a garage or carport Radio signals might travel in only one direction from inside a garage or building -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "massfire" group.
