I learned something interesting over the police scanner
recently. A cop in Dorchester called in saying that every
fire hydrant on Westville St was buried in snow and ice and
he asked that the fire department be notified. He was told that the
fire department no longer digs out hydrants but he
would notify public works who are in charge of them. A short
time later the cop was told that neither the public works
nor the fire department dug them out and in fact the Mayor
had started a community awareness program asking residents
to dig out hydrants. The cop told the dispatcher that a
terribly dangerous situation existed and someone should dig
out the neighborhood hydrants because the awareness program
was not working. Jokingly the dispatcher told the cop to
bring his shovel to work with him. What a dire situation,
the firemen don't dig out hydrants, public works has no
shovels and the neighborhood doesn't care about their safety.
So it is that the hydrants on Westville St remain buried and
no City department is responsible. This is just another
reason to dislike City employees.

I thought I heard BFD on BFD Ch1 (483.1625R) talking about shoveling
hydrants ?????? Peter Sz
