About the Boston Fire Department Dispatch Center - "Fire Alarm" - just
thinking out loud

What is the minimum number of people required on duty?

1. Incidents reported by telephone or radio have to be answered by a
live human being.

2. Incidents reported by computer and dispatched by computer require
very little human intervention.

3. If all stations are equipped with MDTs, and Channel 5 gets an
automated voice system, and if all field units have MDTs or digital
pagers - then the 'dispatch' function would also require very little
human intervention

Back to the question - What is the minimum number of people required
to be on duty at Fire Alarm?

1 to receive telephone calls, and receive MetroFire calls, and receive
alarms via BFD radio

1 to make sure that the CAD is sending the right units to calls, and
to update the status of units who call in via telephone or BFD radio

1 to be a fireground channel dispatcher (seldom active - can also
serve as a calltaker or CAD watcher or whatever)

If the entire system crashes - could 1 person do all of the
dispatching? Sure - why not. Give me a cellphone to receive calls, and
a portable radio to dispatch via channel 1.

Cellphone - Hello, whats burning? 60 State St! OK we are on the way

Ch 1 - Any units available for 60 State St?

Ch 1 - E4 responding

Ch 1 - Its yours
