What if 1 scientist is exposed to 1 bug in the lab. What if this bug
is spread via coughing or just breathing. The scientists gets on a
subway car and exposes 200 people. The 200 people get onto 50 buses
and expose 2,000 people. The 2,000 people arrive at home and expose
4,000 more people. Bottom line - after the evening commute, we have
approx 7,000 exposed people. (It could just as easily be 100,000
people).

If the lab was in NH and the scientist drove his car home, then at the
end of the first commute there would be 1 scientist and 1 cat exposed.

Lets hope that nothing bad is spread that easily.
