Boston Massachusetts today - a prisoner at Mass Eye and Ear Hospital
apparently grabbed a guards gun and shot him in the leg - a 2nd guard
then shot the prisoner

I was listening to 460.50R - call went out for active shooter at Mass
Eye and Ear at 12:00 noon - car says - "thats on District 1" (460.45R)
- dispatcher said OK - someone asked if help was needed from 460.50R
units - I missed the answer - someone asked for repeat of incident -
dispatcher said "active shooter at Mass Eye and Ear ER"

I punched in 460.45R into scanner

Units are responding - dispatcher says "undercover officers in area" -
first officer arrived in 1 minute - he was breaking up inside the bld
- quickly reported as "Code 303 - not active shooter - outside agency"
- that was at 1201PM

Subsequent messages were attempting to determine if any perps were on
the loose - "suspect detained and in custody?" - "suspect on the
move?" - "suspect on scene in custody"

At 1214PM someone announced that there were no additional suspects

No one was ever declared as the IC - multi police commanders arrived
at the scene and started giving orders

Someone reported that they were all set on ambulances at approx 1210

Out of district units were brought into District 1 to run other calls
- they were put on Channel 1 (460.35R) - units at the MGH stayed on Ch
2 (460.45R - their normal channel)

It might be useful to standardize some terms - "suspect on the loose"
- "shooter on the loose" - "shooter possibly at XYZ" - "possible
shooter possibly at XYZ" - "friendly shooter at XYZ" - there are many
ways for confusion to overwhelm the radio traffic - inprecise jargon
does not help

The fire alarm system might have activated due to gunsmoke - probably
BFD responded also

Mass Eye and Ear Security is on 453.2625R IIRC - they might be armed -
MGH Security is on 472.8125R IIRC - they are armed IIRC - Middlesex
County Sheriff deputys might have portable radios on the State TRS -
coordinating 4 police channels at once can be a major headache I am
sure
