In the past, they used "inhouse repeaters". This would show up in the
FCC radio license info as low power FB2 in various buildings.

I think that the "signal boosters" are BDAs (bi directional amplifiers).

Its kinda like flying from Boston to Los Angeles either via Chicago or
Atlanta - either way, you still get to your destination. BDA vs FB2 -
they both get the job done. Just in a little different manor. In fact
I would not be surprised if some blds have both a low power FB2 and a
BDA. The low power FB2 could serve as a backup to the BDA in case the
main FB2 ever went down hard.
