Didnt there used to be a legal concept called the "Firefighters Rule"?
This rule prohibited a firemen from suing a bld owner if the FF was
injured fighting a fire. The logic was IIRC that the bld owner cannot
really make his property safe for people who are climbing around on
the roof with axes and smashing doors etc. If bld owners are going to
get sued everytime that a FF gets hurt, then no one will allow FFs on
their properties. No one will call the FDs. Blds will just burn to the
ground.

And IIRC there have been Fire Officers charged or sued when FFs died.
Australia and England come to mind.
