Norfolk County MA fire radio ops

Norfolk County Massachusetts is protected by approx 30 town or city fire
departments. Many of them operate ambulances also. Each community has its
own dispatcher and fire radio channel (all are on UHF repeater systems -
Quincy has 3 channels - the rest have 1 channel each).

There are 3 additional UHF repeater channels controlled by a "county"
dispatcher. One of the channels is dedicated for "dispatcher to dispatcher"
comms. These repeater channels have pretty good countywide coverage
apparently.

Presently, whenever a box alarm is transmitted, the local FD will switch
all of its units to one of the "county" channels. Any covering / moveup /
fillin units will use the local FD main channel.

An alternative radio procedure could be - have all covering units use a
"county" channel - have all the units of the requesting FD stay on their
normal local channel.

Many of the normal mutual aid radio messages can be accomplished by
cellphones or landline phones - or even a dedicated communications path on
microwave or Internet or some other comms mode.
