About a month ago I had a chat with an elevator repair technician. We
chatted in the elevator as I rode from floor 1 to floor 11. (Actually
- he invited me on the elevator on floor 1. He saw me waiting for the
elevator; so he took me up to 11 as he went to the top floor;
apparently he was doing repair work up in the elevator mechanical room
on the roof).

I started to interrogate him. :-)

Are you a elevator guy?

Yes

Can I ask you some questions? You dont have to answer if you dont want
to - (I think I gave him the option to opt out of the interrogation -
he was very friendly - I never got the impression that I was really
imposing on him)

No problem

The elevator is pulled by cables that go around a pulley connected to
a big motor on the roof, and to a counter balance - right?

Yes - the counter balance is set at 80% (some percentage - maybe 85%
or 90%) of the (rated) weight

Can someone move the elevator up and down by hand - since the system
is balanced?

You have an emergency generator

If the emergency generator fails, could someone move the elevator by hand?

Yes - maybe - (he said something about releasing safety brake and
moving the car)

So, in theory, it is possible to move the car by hand?

We sometimes do it with a small drill

---------------------------------------

That is the conversation to this best of my recollection. When he said
"small drill" - I assume he meant a common, small, hand held, battery
powered electric drill - like for driving screws.

I wonder if a small drill could move a EMT, and a stretcher with a
patient, from floor 14 to floor 1 safely? I wonder if a small
generator from a fire truck could run the elevator in a pinch?
