Yes, I can confirm that the weak link in these seemingly great radios is
the supplied antenna. I found the same problem where there was no receive
in the radio (NWS 162.550 MHz) and I just assumed that the linkage from the
base of the antenna to the circuit board had worked itself loose. When I
took the radio apart, I found that there were NO problems so I just figured
the radio was shot. Since the radio was $30 at Dayton, I actually THREW THE
RADIO IN THE GARBAGE! I went to my local radio club meeting and almost
everyone who had a Baofeng radio said they were having problems with either
receive or transmit. I played Russian Roulette with a few radio/antenna
combinations only to find that these ANTENNAS were the problem. I went home,
rescued the radio from the garbage and ordered a replacement and VOILA! the
radio was fixed.
Start with swapping out the antenna and work from there. A cheap fix for
a simple problem.
