Yes, I can confirm that the weak link in these seemingly great radios is
the supplied antenna.  I found the same problem where there was no receive
in the radio (NWS 162.550 MHz) and I just assumed that the linkage from the
base  of the antenna to the circuit board had worked itself loose.  When I
took  the radio apart, I found that there were NO problems so I just figured
the radio  was shot.  Since the radio was $30 at Dayton, I actually THREW THE
RADIO IN  THE GARBAGE!  I went to my local radio club meeting and almost
everyone who  had a Baofeng radio said they were having problems with either
receive or  transmit.  I played Russian Roulette with a few radio/antenna
combinations  only to find that these ANTENNAS were the problem.  I went home,
rescued the radio from the garbage and ordered a replacement and VOILA! the
 radio was fixed.

Start with swapping out the antenna and work from there.  A cheap fix  for
a simple problem.
