question - what is the point of encryoting data on hard drives?

answer - not much

its all security theatre

Let me make a feeble attempt at translating this one page article -

If someone gets access to your hard drives or storage - then they
probably already have access to your encryption keys via your
operating system - ergo - it is pointless to go to the trouble of
encrypting your storage devices

Although - if someone drives a tank into your server farm and runs off
(very slowly) with your hard drives - encryption might slow them down
or make the hard drives useless
