GM will pay $900 million to settle a criminal probe over its delayed
recall of flawed ignition switches, according to court documents. At
least 124 deaths are blamed on the problem. No GM executives have been
charged in the probe.

GM = General Motors = motor vehicle manufacturer

What does this tell us about safety in the USA?

I think that the feds consider $9M to be the cost of one death. So
$900M just barely covers the death toll. (Whatever that means.)

Lets think about this semi logically. GM starts to hear about
problems. GM does an analysis. GM figures that it will cost $XXXB to
fix the problem. It will save XX lives. Is the price to high? If the
price is above $9M per death, then the feds probably wont be
implementing a recall. If the cost is below $9M per death - maybe the
feds will order a recall - maybe they wont. If they dont - its payday
baby! If they do - maybe we have recall insurance that will cover the
cost.

Is there any such thing as recall insurance? Maybe it is called -
"soak the stock holders".
