Japan - all expressways seem to be 2 lanes in each direction - never
three or 4 lanes -many elevated sections - sometimes stacked on top of
each other - some sections of roadway are painted red - not sure why -
maybe on blind curves

Boston MA - FD apparently has a policy that calls cannot be cancelled
except by a FD unit - police cant cancel calls - EMS cant cancel calls
- alarm companies cant cancel calls - even fire dispatchers cant
cancel calls apparently - once a call gets dispatched, someone from FD
has to go to the scene and put eyes on the situation - I have to back
pedal on that a little - if the fire dispatcher knows that a unit was
sent to a wrong location, the unit can be given a "621" code (or some
code - forget the exact the exact number) - you will hear from the
dispatcher - "Engine 1 you can return, (that is) a 621" - "return" =
return to quarters

Boston MA - FD might respond to non injury motor vehicle accidents -
but only if on a major street - BFd apparently does respond to all
"motor vehicle accident with injury" calls

Boston MA - FD might respond to 911 hang up calls but only if at a hospital

I wonder how many cops in the USA serve as volunteer firefighters and
EMTs? I wonder how many career firefighters or career EMS staff also
serve as volunteer / on call firefighters or EMTs? How about nurses
and doctors - how many of them serve as oncall EMTs or FFs? There is
really no such thing (very rare) as a 'on call' cop in the USA.
(except maybe the SWAT teams) - How many DPW workers seve on VFDs?

What are the odds that every VFD in the USA can be converted to a
fulltime fire/amb crew or a fulltime PSO? The national Parks might be
a good guide here. Most of the national parks are very rural. They are
self contained without backup from local publci safety agencies. So
they have multi hat rangers and on call mtcne people who serve as on
call FFs. Small towns down to 1,000 population can probably afford to
have 1 or 2 fulltime people who can do the police and ambulance work -
that makes up 90% of the public safety work.

If every small town phased out their VFD - how would that affect ISO
ratings? How would it affect death rates and fire losses?
