Lets play the Devils Advocate for a little while -

1. VTAC / UTAC / ITAC have been a complete failure. Coverage is
abysmal - usage is minuscule.

2. The 800 band reconfiguration has been a multi billion dollar
fiasco. It was 99% unnecessary.

3. FirstWave will be a complete disaster. No one ever mentions the
$200B aspect of the program.

4. USA public safety radio systems are fragmented; overly complex;
prone to doubling, feedback, and dead spots; poorly engineered; and
designed to fantasy world operational requirements.

5. The money driven capitalistic nature of the USA economy has
provided a cash cow for consultants and manufacturers, but produced a
third world level of capability for public safety radio systems.

6. Many safety agencies have radios that essentially stop working at
their municipal borders or when they enter a building.

7. If you dont believe any of this - think about the communications
devices that were primal to the Star Trek TV series. The original one
- from 1966. That was 49 years ago. When exactly will public safety
radios reach the level of dependability and ease of use that was
envisioned on Star Trek? Never? Oh ye of little imagination.
