Lets play the Devils Advocate for a little while - 1. VTAC / UTAC / ITAC have been a complete failure. Coverage is abysmal - usage is minuscule.
2. The 800 band reconfiguration has been a multi billion dollar fiasco. It was 99% unnecessary. 3. FirstWave will be a complete disaster. No one ever mentions the $200B aspect of the program. 4. USA public safety radio systems are fragmented; overly complex; prone to doubling, feedback, and dead spots; poorly engineered; and designed to fantasy world operational requirements. 5. The money driven capitalistic nature of the USA economy has provided a cash cow for consultants and manufacturers, but produced a third world level of capability for public safety radio systems. 6. Many safety agencies have radios that essentially stop working at their municipal borders or when they enter a building. 7. If you dont believe any of this - think about the communications devices that were primal to the Star Trek TV series. The original one - from 1966. That was 49 years ago. When exactly will public safety radios reach the level of dependability and ease of use that was envisioned on Star Trek? Never?
