Let me tell ya a story about a man named Jeb ........ No - let me tell ya a story about a fire station
In the back of my mind I have this idea that Allenspark Colorado has 4 fire stations. So I look at their website. No mention of 4 fire stations. Then I go here - http://www.firedepartment.net/directory/colorado/boulder-county/allenspark/allenspark-fire-protection-district - yup 4 stations Then I try to find the Covenant Station at 7400 Hwy 7. I punch that into the Google Maps search function. First suggestion is 7400 Hwy 7 in Estes Park but that is the town north of Allenspark. And the location is approx 10 miles N of Allenspark. So then I put "7400 Hwy 7 Allenspark" in the search engine. That gives me a location about 1 mile south of Allenspark. So I go back and look at the north location. There is a Convenant Church nearby. OK. Then we start looking at the buildings near the Covenant Church. There is a 2 bay garage there but no signs. So we cruise down the highway about 500 feet and find one of the yellow fire station signs on the highway. Bingo - here is the 2 bay wood garage that must be a fire station - https://www.google.com/maps/place/7400+CO-7,+Estes+Park,+CO+80517/@40.2745642,-105.5418805,3a,75y,261.16h,100.47t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sE4FNOtIPzRUx3H_v_poH0A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!4m5!3m4!1s0x876963a8ca771163:0xaf80f9514b7661d2!8m2!3d40.274047!4d-105.5416883 Moral of the story - I am not rally sure how the Google Maps addressing system works. I think that each building is tagged with a street address which is based on the mailing address. But the mailing address might include a post office name that is 20 miles away. I think that each building address is also tagged with a county name - but that info is usually not seen. But you seem to be able to search for an address and a county name. You can also search for intersections - XXX Street at YYY Road etc Also - I searched for '7400 Hwy 7' but the result came back at "7400 CO-7" as in 'Colorado State Highway 7' - Google seems to do OK with handling 'Hwy' vs 'Highway' vs 'State Route' vs 'State Highway'- but County assessors info seems to fail miserably at that Many times when I search Google Maps it will suggest an address with a different town name - probably based on the name of the post office - but usually I can force the search to use the address and town name of my choosing - and the results are pretty good usually Bottom bottom line - as usual - be cautious when looking up addresses in Google Maps - especially in rural areas -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "massfire" group.
