dispatcher has a pronounced echo (still)

1249 pm edt - they just did the morning lineup / rollcall - Big Pine
is on day off - Eng 310 is Capt plus 3 (per Little Tujunga Station on
Tone 11) - Water Tender at Little Tujunga is unavailable

lets talk about this

Angeles National Forest (ANF) uses Type 3 engines - 500 gallon water
tanks - maybe 500 GPM pump or 150 GPM pump - seating for maybe 6 -
approx 25 engines in 25 stations around the Forest

staffing for each Type 3 engine is usually 1 captain and 4
firefighters - apparently ANF does not have enough money to staff each
engine 7 days a week - so some days the engine is "off" - in other
words - no one is scheduled to staff the engine - maybe 1 or 2 days
per week - depending on the time of year

they obviously have a choice - staff the engine with 5 people for 5
days - or staff it with 4 people for 7 days

today - seeing as how Big Pine is unstaffed - and probably 10 miles
from the next closest station - ANF will probably have to move some
engine (with 1 hour of travel time) to fill in at Big Pine

so if anyone has a motorcycle crash at Big Pine in the next couple of
hours - you might be totally screwed

lets talk about the unstaffed water tender at Little Tujunga - ANF
only staffs 3 water tenders - 1 person each - they carry maybe 2500
gallons of water - at this point they are down 33% on water tenders
because they cant fund 1 guy for the day

the Little Tujunga engine is staffed with 1 Capt and 3 FF today - so
obviously they have no real problem running 4 man engines

I bet they have 20 engines today running 5 man crews - if they take 1
guy off of each of these engines - they can staff 5 more engines - in
other words - they can increase the number of engines by close to 25%
by reducing staffing on each engine by 1 person

but of course - gotta have 5 people on the engine - its the holy grail
- is there any logic behind it? - I dont know
