Believe it or not having rounds fired in your direction will make you get down real quick! I've been lucky enough to never be in combat but to the untrained it will make you hit the ground and freeze up! There is a method the British Army that is used called RTR when you are ambushed you "Return Fire" in the general direction to make the enemy keep their heads down, "Take Cover" after firing a few rounds you then take cover, doesn't matter if that is getting down on your belt buckle or finding a nice juicy thick wall to hide behind. Quite self explanatory really. And the last one is "Return Fire" again!
