iirc this was a brand new convention center - actually was built in 1960

this is about 10 years before we went to IIT in Chicago - CFD was on
VHF high band then - 154.13 R Main / north side of city - 153.77 R
Englewood / south side of city - 2 separate fire dispatch offices then
- you can hear both of them on this radio tape

the dividing line between north and south was 39th ave iirc - this
fire was at 23rd ave iirc - so it was close to the border

fireground might have been on 154.385 or 153.83 - maybe all the
ambulances were on 154.22 then - they also used 154.295 iirc

"still alarm" = 2 engines and 2 ladder / trucks + 1 battalion chief

"box alarm" = still alarm plus 2 more engines plus 1 more ladder + 1
squad (snorkel / rescue combination) + maybe division chief

still alarm was for regular house fires - upgrade to box alarm could
be done by dispatchers or first arriving unit

2-11 = 2nd alarm - another 4 E + 2 L above still and box iirc

3-11 = 3rd alarm = maybe another 4 E + 2 L

for telegraph boxes pulled from the street iirc they got either 1
engine or maybe 1 E + 1 L sometimes - they called that the "check the
box" assignment

a master box from a highrise, school, or hospital etc got an immediate
"still and box" - so a total of 4 E + 3 L + 1 R etc - as you hear on
this recording

"strike out the box" = ("sound the allout" in boston) = cancel all
responding units

The 1960 exposition hall was destroyed in a spectacular fire on
January 16, 1967, despite being thought fireproof by virtue of its
steel and concrete construction.[5] At the time of the fire, the
building contained highly combustible exhibits, several hydrants were
shut off, and there were no sprinklers on the main floor where the
fire started. Thus the fire spread quickly and destructively, taking
the life of security guard Kenneth Goodman.[5][6]

The fire was investigated by a team led by Rolf H. Jensen, Professor
of Fire Protection Engineering at the Illinois Institute of
Technology, who later went on to found RJA Group. Many lessons were
learned and multiple building, electrical, and fire codes for the city
and worldwide were amended to avert a repeat situation.

Although many wanted to rebuild the hall on a different site, Chicago
mayor Richard J. Daley elected to rebuild on the foundations of the
burned building
