A spokesperson with Chatham Emergency Services recognizes staffing is
a problem within the agencies but says there are a lot of unnecessary
911 calls that take up emergency personnel’s time. They say many
residents do not know the difference between emergencies and
non-emergencies.

CES receives close to 200 calls per day, but a spokesperson says 40%
to 50% of those calls end up canceled or the caller did not go to the
hospital because the situation was not an emergency.

15% of E-911 calls were left unanswered last year, according to 911
Deputy Director Russ Palmer.
