As a result of ongoing research into the history of the Oak Bluffs Fire Department, using the online Vineyard Gazette and documents recently donated to the Fire Museum, OBFCA uncovered what is likely the first Line of Duty Death (LODD) of a department member in November 1893. The Highland House (located in the area of the current East Chop Beach Club) burned to the ground on October 26, 1893. On November 16, The Gazette reported the death of Mr. John Francis, age 24, as a result of pneumonia caught at that fire.
