Police were called just after 5 p.m. to 20 Main St. in Spencer for a report of a shooting. Advertisement According to Jeff Travers, the Senior First Assistant District Attorney for the Worcester District Attorney’s Office, when officers arrived, they found a person suffering from a gunshot wound near a multi-family home. Several minutes later, police received a report of someone matching the suspected gunman’s description in the area of West Main Street in Spencer. The suspect was later identified by the Worcester County District Attorney as Patrick Madison, 35. He was a Worcester Department of Public Works employee. Madison fled to a nearby Family Dollar store at the Big Y Shopping Plaza and barricaded himself inside. The store was subsequently evacuated by police officers. While Madison was barricaded inside a bathroom, he again began shooting toward officers, striking an officer. The officer, who is a member of the Millbury Police Department and is part of the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council, or CEMLEC, was shot several times and was rushed to UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester, Travers said. Milbury Police Department Chief Brian Lewos said the officer who was injured his officer suffered "multiple gunshot wounds to non-life-threatening areas of the body." The officer, who was not identified, is in stable condition and awaiting surgery. A Family Dollar employee told NewsCenter 5 that he saw the suspect run in and barricade himself in the store. He said he then heard what sounded like gunshots and saw someone with what he believed to be a gun. "He yelled at me, and I don't remember what he said, but as soon as he yelled at me, I just ran out the back door," the employee said. "It was terrifying. I've never experienced anything like that." Madison was killed in a subsequent shootout with police and died at the scene. Video of the scene showed a large police response at the shopping plaza. Another witness, Savannah Cotter, told NewsCenter 5 that she was with her children at the time of the shooting. Cotter recorded video of a large police scene near a McDonald's, before three gunshots rang out and the video cut off. In the video below, Cotter said police were beating a man before the gunfire was heard. Play Video Police have not provided an update on the condition of the victim of the first shooting. The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office and Spencer Police Department are investigating the incident.
