as a reference I prefer to use plain console (no X),
and those x-terminal-emulators that are consistent with plain console
(meaning also rxvt, aterm, wterm, Eterm and old mrxvt (pre r213)
are good here).

As I have mentioned before, escape sequences seem to work
fine, I mean, I am able to get all fg/bg/bright/plain combinations
I want. Still using ncurses library is no use for this purpose
(bright background) any more.

I understand, but I think it is rather per application fault,
assuming that it does not allow you to configure colors.
