Are you using Xft? If yes, this is a problem with some versions of the freetype library. Under some DPI / font size combinations, the size reported by freetype of font glyphs sometimes differs by one pixel from the size actually drawn. See if you find the same problem in xterm. Usually, when I have the problem you show, I see the same problem in xterm. You should be able to avoid it by upgrading the freetype libraries, and setting your DPI appropriately (96 or higher I think). GI -- 100 THINGS I'D DO IF I EVER BECAME AN EVIL OVERLORD 59.
