Thanks for the suggestion. My secret plan was to remove the png / jpeg / etc support from mrxvt, and then use the lightning fast imlib2 instead. Hopefully this will lead to icons in tabs, and customisable tabbar icons with alpha blending. Who knows when that will happen.
