Thank you very much.  You were absolutely right about bash and the
PROMPT_COMMAND.  I commented out the relevant PROMPT_COMMAND lines in my
.bashrc and tab titles are no longer forced into following the
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]' convention.

My apologies for not checking the wiki before posting my question, but I
honestly never thought bash itself would be to blame for specifying tab
titles in a terminal.
