Try loading xterm with an identical font. Do the windows look identical?

I looked at the code; there's nothing that changes the hint style in
mrxvt -- it should use whatever fontconfig returns, so there might be
another issue here.

Try figuring out what font is matched with fc-match? Not sure if you can
get the hinting info though. Try writing a minimal C program copying the
relevant section from mrxvt that displays "hello world" using your font
settings.

Everything "WorksForMe (tm)" and I've no idea where the problem could
be. So you'll have to do some investigating.
