IUSS Philosophy Workshop

L&PIC - Linguistics & Philosophy IUSS Center. Epistemology and Philosophy of
Mathematics

Mathematical Concepts: Analysis, Definitions and Explications

Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia - www.iusspavia.it

June 5-6, 2025

The workshop, hosted on June 5-6 by the Linguistics & Philosophy Center at the
School of
Advanced Studies IUSS Pavia, will explore ongoing research related to a variety
of methods
traditionally involved in conceptual clarification of logico-mathematical
concepts, in the
foundations of mathematics and, more generally, in logical and mathematical
theorizing:
conceptual analysis, explicit and implicit definitions, and explications.

The workshop is organized in collaboration with the Scuola di Studi Superiori
Ferdinando Rossi
(SSST) of the University of Turin, and is funded by the EFC—Educating Future
Citizens
initiative, a network of higher education schools supported by Italy’s National
Recovery and
Resilience Plan (PNRR). The initiative aims to enhance guidance and advanced
training activities
and offer new opportunities to high school, university and doctoral students.
It is also part of
the activities of the PRIN National Project PUMa: Proof and Understanding in
Mathematics. Purity
of Methods, Simplicity, and Explanation in Mathematical Reasoning (Funded by
the European Union
- Next Generation EU).

Confirmed contributions:

definitions:

Call for applications for doctoral travel grants
We invite PhD students to participate in the workshop and to apply for doctoral
travel grants.
For PhD students traveling from Italy grants will be 250€ and for PhD students
traveling from
outside of Italy grants will be 500€. We can cover up to 9 (resp. 4 and 3)
grants in total. The
workshop will start in the morning of June 5 and close by late afternoon on
June 6. A conference
dinner will take place on the evening of June 5. A full program will be
circulated in due time.

To apply, please send an email that includes (1) a brief explanation of your
interest in
participating in the workshop (e.g. how it is relevant to your research
interests) and (2) your
CV and affiliation by May 21 to rachel.bo...@iusspavia.it.
