There are so many people around us that don't like mathematics. When I try to find out the reason behind it I see that the methods which were used for teaching math in their early age was abstract. When a child starts to learn math it should be on a concrete level, then move to semi concrete and end in an abstract form. This process is very important for the cognitive development of a child. When taught in this way children will love maths. This month's edition of Teacher Pages consists of strategies on developing conceptual understanding in maths, through moving from concrete to abstract. The first video showcases a strategy of how concrete, daily life situations can be used to develop the concept of GRAPHS <http://ceque.us11.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=a302247390e57da6da24e3632&id=cdd780887e&e=493bcece94> . In this video, students survey the trees around their campus, collect data, present it in a graph, analyse the data and then come to a conclusion. This is the best example of activity based learning. In the second video, the teacher uses the analogy of bank transactions and symbols for minus and plus numbers, respectively. In the use of symbols, the teacher teaches the topic at a semi concrete level, with the help of which students can go through and can understand the concept at the abstract level. When children recognize different attributes and connect it in a different situations, it helps them understand the concept of set, subset, complex set.
