We've also had this discussion internally a bit. It usually concludes with us wishing that someone would just port jsmath to Python, or implement Knuth's TeX layout rules in Python. :) Currently Chaco2 doesn't have a math markup mechanism, but it was fairly trivial for me to port mpl's mathtext to Chaco1.
