Sounds good to me -- if there were a big savings in file size I thought it might be worth looking into, but he who writes the code gets the most votes :-) I think we should make stix the default for mathtext.fontset once you get these changes incorporated, presuming PDF and PS work as expected -- is there any reason not to?
