Although Pgfplots can also do ~somewhat~ fancy stuff, I think you're definitely right on that one. When I look at the matplotlib gallery, I'm getting dizzy. For everyday purposes, though, I'm rather interested in somewhat simple plots: 2D graphs, maybe an image plot, something like that. I'll see how far I get with that..
