I installed
python-matplotlib_0.87.5-2.1_amd64.deb (rev. 2761)
on Debian etch (Python 2.4.4c0) and get this warning when trying to plot
something:
In [1]: plot([1,2,3])

UserWarning: Could not match sans-serif, normal, normal. Returning
/usr/share/matplotlib/mpl-data/cmtt10.ttf
