I can report the same problem with polish characters. Using WX and GTK it works but when using WXAgg or GTKAgg it doesn't. I wrote about this problem some time ago on this group but no response. So we are two. I can add that the problem ocurrs in mpl 0.87.5 (debian sid) and not in mpl 0.87.2 (debian sarge).
