I think that it's possible to get impressive results in a few hours, but not become a pro. I've been using matplotlib for something like 20-40 hours right now. I've done some neat things, but have had some problems. I've also written a neat pre-processor that allows you to embed python and matplotlib code in LaTeX, so you don't need to have it all spread out. And you can populate the results from SQL queries, right there in the LaTeX.
