Hi Alex,

I don't know if it can be done with matplotlib, but for drawing meshes 
and so on I use vtk http://public.kitware.com/VTK/  On that page are 
also examples how to do that job, just search for "vtkUnstructuredGrid" 
  or "vtkStructuredGrid" depending on your mesh.
