Ah..I see what was going on; the numerical ticks are output in LaTeX
math mode (e.g., $123$) and therefore rendered in CM if the specified
fonts do not provide any math fonts. Is there a way to use LaTeX font
packages such as euler, ccfonts, and cmbright?
