Since this is on Mac OS X, I suspect it is the long-standing font problem; that is, matplotlib finds and uses some system fonts but does not embed them correctly. If you force the Bitstream Vera family of fonts, does it work then? >> >> : Error: No paper information available - using defaults I think this is an xpdf error message.
