All I can say is that pure ipython is very likely to NOT work at all. It makes too many assumptions about being in a terminal/readline to work inside a random GUI. We do have in SVN (saw branch) a prototype WX client that will allow this, but it's still a looong way from being done. For GTK, some people did hack something out: http://ipython.scipy.org/moin/Cookbook/EmbeddingInGTK that works. I suppose you might be able to implement something similar in some other GUI, but I've never tried.
