Thanks for the reply. I fixed my problem and thought I would post my findings. Basically, I never did find out what the problem was with those particular version was, but upgrading the packages eventually fixed it. Of course, that meant compiling numpy, python, pango, cairo.... etc. Took forever, but it did eventually work.
