All: I'm using the text() function to place city labels on a map with Basemap. However, many of these cities are so close together that the labels overlap when they're placed on the map.
Is there some way to determine the bounding box for a given text object _before_ placing it on the map, so that I can write an algorithm to detect overlaps? Alternately, if someone else has some clever way of placing non- conflicting labels on maps, I'd love to hear about it!
