matplotlib is should already be attempting to dynamically link libz when 
it generates ft2font.so.  I wonder why it wasn't for you.  Can you 
revert any manual changes, remove the build directory ("build" at the 
top of the source tree), rebuild ("python setup.py build") and attach 
the output to this list?
