MPL has a few dependencies that are not provided by OS-X. You will need 
libpng, many of the others are now supplied by OS-X.

There are a number of ways to get libpng:

Try googling around a bit for "OS-X matplotlib dependencies building libpng"

and see what you get.

The other option is to wait until someone else builds a binary for 2.6.....
